HIRING THEM WAS A BIG MISTAKE and I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE. I hired Backbone Construction and Roofing to build a covered front porch, concrete sidewalk/walkway, additional concrete pad, a large concrete footer (later canceled) around my driveway, and a rear deck/patio with additional concrete at the steps. After signing the contract, they required me to get a land survey, which cost me $600. They require 50% down payment. After a few months later they tried to tell me the price of the decking materials increased by $3,500, which is a 70% price increase. FYI, if you back out of the contract, they will keep 10% of the down payment even if they do no work. They filed the permit with incorrect information classifying my house as a manufactured home and tried to change the build designs. I had to figure this error out for them. There was NO OVERSIGHT on the build. When issues were pointed out, I was told they would be fixed (most were never fixed) or that it was built that way as required by code (not true). Example: I asked for concrete footers using round forms above the soil line so wood posts would not touch dirt or be buried. What I got concrete were footers that are below the soil line that hold water (2 inches of water) at every post and at the bottom of the steps. A perfect situation for wood rot. I inquired about this issue during the build and they did nothing, they just continued the build even after I was told they would fix it (they never did). They just continued on with the build like nothing happened. By the time the front porch structure is in place and they told me there was nothing they can do now. They even tried building it without installing all of the concrete footers, even though the contracted drawing called for all of them to have concrete footers. During the demolition and build, they threw all of the trash, debris, screws, nails into a big pile in my back yard and front yard. They also left trash under the back deck and front porch. They mixed concrete on my driveway that I had to scrape and clean off when I came home from work. I also took it upon themselves to use my wheel barrow to mix their concrete and broke my wheel barrow. They also splattered concrete on my white PVC fence and did not clean it up. The porch frame work was apparently enough to pass inspection, but looked horrible (looks like they used scrap wood to frame out the roof, they used different width boards because it was all getting covered). Even though there was an engineered drawing done, they basically nailed as many boards together as needed to pass inspection. When they added the roof extension and shingles, they managed to crush all of my attic vents and did not even have the decency to bend them back into shape or tell me. I asked about the decking layout because I was never consulted on that. I was told the decking layout would be a specific way, which looked horrible. I asked them to make a slight change to the decking layout that would not cause any frame work to be adjusted. Backbone decided to say they would charge an extra $800 for “extra materials”. These extra materials were required because the failed inspection they had to fix, all of which was before decking layout issue. Once the porch and deck were built, still with issues not fixed, they failed the deck railing inspections. The rail slats were loose because they used the wrong parts, which also resulted in them manually cutting the step railings to make them work (this looks trashy and was never fixed by Backbone). They did fix the loose railing slats because they had too. Every railing was installed crooked/slanted, which they said they fixed, but they are only less crooked now. They also never called in the inspection prior to finishing the roof work. They subcontracted out for the sidewalk concrete pours. I ended up with a slanted sidewalk going from my driveway to the front steps. The bottom step also creates a tripping hazard that Backbone did not fix.

I contracted Backbone to frame a cased opening and install my doors for a home office and add crown molding. While it took a while to get my job scheduled, when they installed, it was done correctly, cleanly and on time. I couldn’t be happier.
